Confessions of … a hotel housekeeper

February 6th, 2009  |  Filed under: Jack on Travel Tips

Three simple letters could inspire the “Hallelujah” chorus: DND, or do not disturb. One sign hanging on a doorknob, and the day’s work was shortened by half an hour. Two signs? Pure heaven, but only if they remained there until my eight-hour shift ended — otherwise I’d have to circle back and clean the rooms.

My daily list of 15 rooms (out of 325 in the hotel) consisted of DOs (due out) and Os (occupied), which in housekeeping lingo meant the guests were scheduled to check out or were staying another night. An occupied room was less labor-intensive (making the beds rather than changing the sheets saved me 20 minutes), but there was always the possibility the guest would stay in the room while you worked.   Full Story

This may shock many, but for people like myself who studied topics like this in college it is the unfortunate truth. I definitely had some dental floss under my sheets in a hotel I stayed at while on a road trip.  Does anyone have any nasty stories from a hotel stay that was just plain nasty?

I never stayed in a nasty Hotel. I am actually a housekeeper, and hearing these stories is horrible. I would NEVER do that to anyone. Even if it means saving me a few min. Yes we do know the pay when we sign on for the job, which isnt much, for me 7.35/hour, no a lot of people dont know how much to tip or even if they should. From my experience leave anywhere from 2-5 is enough, you can leave more if you feel that your housekeeper did a good job and if you find the room nasty after they “cleaned” then they dont deserve a tip, but if you are going to leave the room trashed then definately leave one to compensate. I mean on average 30 min in a room is what i normally spend on a good day. when it takes me 45 min or more to clean up your filth it makes for a long long day. not to mention the feeling i get as im cleaning up. We work long hours, put up with a lot of things and deal with stuff that would make most people sick. You think we would get paid better and i just think that people should take that into mind when they are there, just think about it, if you were the one cleaning the room what would you think or feel

Aw, this was a really nice post. In idea I want to put in writing like this moreover – taking time and precise effort to make a very good article… however what can I say… I procrastinate alot and under no circumstances appear to get something done.
