CNN in 3rd Place For First Time

March 30th, 2009  |  Filed under: Daily Post

NEW YORK (AP) — CNN is poised to finish March third in the prime-time weeknight ratings behind Fox News Channel and MSNBC, the first time this has ever happened for the channel that pioneered the cable news genre nearly three decades ago.

CNN says its overall business is healthy and it is not straying from its straight news path. But it is suffering more audience erosion than its rivals since the peak days of the presidential election, further proof that the opinionated prime-time shows on Fox and MSNBC have greater audience loyalty.

CNN’s weekday prime-time ratings are relatively flat compared to last year during the primary campaign, up 1 percent from March 2008, according to Nielsen Media Research. Fox’s ratings have jumped 30 percent and MSNBC, the new No. 2, is up 24 percent. The biggest growth in cable news is for CNN’s partner, HLN, formerly Headline News, which is up 62 percent.

Fox remains on a mountain above its two closest competitors, with its prime-time audience in March more than that of MSNBC and CNN combined. “The O’Reilly Factor” has done particularly well, keeping more of its postelection audience than anything else on CNN and MSNBC.

This is the moment a group of students tried to abduct a giant model dinosaur from a museum as a drunken prank. The young men had been out celebrating the end of their course when they walked past the life-size monster.

Deciding to relocate it in the middle of a roundabout as a joke, they set about lifting the 20ft long and 10ft tall plastic triceratops.

It took ten of them carry the giant model over an iron gate outside the Dinosaur Museum in Dorchester, Dorset. But just as they carried it off above their heads into the night, they were stopped in their tracks by a policeman.

The revellers were ordered to take the dinosaur back immediately otherwise they would have been arrested for theft and criminal damage. Full Story

Captain Fantastic will bring his magic to Calgary after Sir Elton John made Alberta Ballet an offer it couldn’t refuse.

The flamboyant music legend will be the second big name to lend his expertise to the ballet company, after its wildly successful collaboration with Canadian folk icon Joni Mitchell.

It was the Mitchell work that actually inspired Elton, the man responsible for pop hits Benny and the Jets and Rocket Man, as well as musical scores for stage and screen.

Last September, Alberta Ballet’s artistic director Jean Grand-Maitre received a call from the pop icon.

“He had seen The Fiddle and the Drum, our collaboration with Joni Mitchell and was offering his music for a similar treatment.

“We pretty much couldn’t refuse an offer like that,” said Samantha Garner, a spokeswoman for Alberta Ballet.

In a statement, Elton said he “was enthralled and inspired with The Fiddle and the Drum and I am looking forward to seeing what Jean and the Alberta Ballet will create with my music.”

For his part, Grand-Maitre is “ecstatic to be able to create this new production, and I know that it will most certainly capture the interest of the entire world.”

Grand-Maitre described Elton as “a semi-abstract ballet set to the music of Sir Elton John which will offer audiences an electrifying portrayal of the challenges and triumphs which created this outspoken and spiritually enriched musical icon of today.”

Elton will premiere at the Jubilee Auditorium for three nights beginning on May 6, 2010.

It will close Alberta Ballet’s 2009-2010 season, which includes The National Ballet of Canada’s The Sleeping Beauty and Alberta Ballet’s highly acclaimed Romeo and Juliet.

Need a Pothole Filled in Your City? Call KFC

CHICAGO (AdAge.com) — Don’t be surprised if you see Col. Sanders out filling potholes. In an unusual cause-marketing push, KFC is tackling the pothole problem in Louisville, Ky. in exchange for stamping the fresh pavement with “Re-freshed by KFC,” a chalky stencil likely to fade away in the next downpour.

“This program is a perfect example of that rare and optimal occurrence when a company can creatively market itself and help local governments and everyday Americans across the country,” said Javier Benito, exec VP-marketing and food innovation at KFC. Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson noted in a statement that budgets are tight for cities across the country, and finding funding for road repairs is a dirty job. “It’s great to have a concerned corporation like KFC create innovative private/public partnerships like this pothole refresh program.”

The KFC program appears to be part of a growing body of consumer-service marketing that connects in a meaningful way. This past holiday season, Charmin provided a public restroom in Times Square for the third year running. The company has also developed an application for iPhone and BlackBerry that helps consumers find toilets when the need arises. Samsung has installed electrical charging stations in many major airports to help travelers stay connected while in limbo.
