For 20 years, Schubas has been one of the top music clubs in the city. It has helped launch fledgling artists such as Dave Matthews, Modest Mouse, Feist and My Morning Jacket, among others.

And for 20 years, it has seen those artists move on to bigger venues and promoters, who reaped the benefits.

That in part explains why Chris and Mike Schuba, the brothers who co-own the Southport Avenue club, are preparing to open a new mid-sized music venue, Lincoln Hall, at 2424 N. Lincoln Av. in the fall to complement their first club. It will join a music scene already crowded with similar-sized rock venues, included the Double Door, Martyrs and Logan Square Auditorium. But the owners say they can thrive by basically doing a larger version of Schubas, which has built its reputation on astute bookings, excellent sound and an intimate atmosphere.

The new location, on the former site of the Three Penny movie house (built in 1913), will be about three times the size of Schubas, which has a capacity of 167. The Schubas brothers and their partners bought the 4,400-square-foot Lincoln Avenue property last September for $2.7 million, and have sunk hundreds of thousands of dollars into it to create a soundproofed, two-level concert space. A front room and bar will serve food. But the primary focus will be music.

Will you visit the Lincoln Hall? I know I will!

With a revoked license because of a previous drunken-driving conviction, Dennis Cretton shouldn’t drive. But authorities said that didn’t stop the 49-year-old man from drunkenly driving up to a gas station for more beer _ on his yellow riding lawnmower.

Cretton was charged with felony aggravated driving under the influence after neighbors reported he was weaving in and out of traffic on his lawnmower Friday night.

When deputies tried to stop him, authorities said Bretton drove the mower into his home’s front yard, his 12-pack of Milwaukee’s Best spilling onto the ground along the way.

Remember Anna Chlumsky, the fresh-scrubbed kid with the cherry-red grin in the 1991 family flick “My Girl”? Her starring role as Vada, a motherless tomboy going through some growing pains, earned her an MTV Movie Award for “Best Kiss” (with co-star Macaulay Culkin) and a Young Artist Award for “Most Promising Young Newcomer” — not too shabby for a 10-year-old. Primed for superstardom, Chlumsky’s next role was in the dubious “My Girl 2″ — after which she promptly fell off most people’s radars.

The Band Will Perform One of Their Three Albums As Well As Requests Submitted By Fans Through Their Web Site

(AP) To prepare for their current tour, Steely Dan had to relearn their own music.

The band will perform one of three albums “Aja,” “Gaucho” or “The Royal Scam” in its entirety on select dates of their Rent Party tour. On other dates, they will play requests that fans submit through their Web site. That means Steely Dan had to do some homework.

“We had to learn a lot a whole bunch of stuff we haven’t been doing, just trying to guess what people might vote for,” said singer Donald Fagen.

Guitarist Walter Becker found the idea intriguing because some of the songs they had never performed live.

“We had stopped performing in the ’70s when we recorded these three albums, so we never really went out to perform the tunes from these three albums,” said Becker.

Fans can choose from several Steely Dan tracks, but it’s no time to play stump-the-band.

“They’re only able to request Steely Dan songs from a menu of choices that has maybe 50 tunes on it,” said Becker. “Not knowing in advance what would be the most popular, what we’d end up playing, we couldn’t prepare all of the songs from all of the albums.”

The band expects fans will want the hits, such as “Hey Nineteen,” “Josie” and “Do It Again.” That’s where they try to make things interesting.

Another thriller is developing in the complex afterlife of Michael Jackson.

Computer hard drives that contain a trove of unreleased songs are currently unaccounted for. DiLeo told Rolling Stone that there were at least 100 songs — including many recorded at Jackson’s 1980s peak — that were never released, including a few “sensational” tracks that were left off the album “Bad.” The drives also contained more recent songs recorded with Ne-Yo, Akon, and will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas

DiLeo said he was “pretty sure” the hard drives were at the family’s Hayvenhurst compound in Encino, Calif, and “The estate lawyers will send out letters” to recover the drives so that the contents can be logged.
