Every Fall, Hollywood releases a fresh new batch of blood-curdling terror-inducing cinematic gems to scare the crap out of moviegoers everywhere. 2009 is no different. A new crop is arriving just in time for All Hallows Eve chock full of sociopath thrillers, domestic disturbances, alien invaders, and unexplained ghostly events. All designed to get those hairs on the back of your neck to stand up straight. Here’s a run down of what to expect in regards to 2009’s box office horrors:
PANDORUM
Imagine you’re an astronaut. And you wake up to find yourself alone with no recollection of how you got there. Also, imagine you’re Dennis Quaid. Scared yet?
PARANORMAL ACTIVITY
Shot in the same style as Blair Witch Project, this handheld-camera investigation into the weird occurrences happening to an attractive girl by her boyfriend turn out extremely terrifying. Buzz around the Internet says this one is pretty scary.
THE STEPFATHER
Of course Hollywood can’t allow the new stepfather figure to ever be anything other than a murderous psycho. In this new film, it’s much the same: boy becomes suspicious of his mother’s new boyfriend… turns out he’s a killer. I don’t know why anyone thinks it is safe to remarry these days.
LAW ABIDING CITIZEN
Gerard Butler plays a man who exacts revenge on the killers of his wife and daughter and the judicial system that allowed one of them to get off free. From a jail cell, Butler’s character terrorizes Philadelphia and the corrupt District Attorney (Jamie Foxx) who kept the criminals from getting the sentence they deserved.
SAW VI
It seems we can’t have Halloween anymore without a new addition to the Saw horror franchise. Expect the same mix of deadly traps and gory violence that you know and love from the previous five Saw films.
THE BOX
What would you do if you were given a box that had a button which when pressed would give you a million dollars, but also kill someone else somewhere in the world? Cameron Diaz and James Marsden wrestle with the dilemma in this new thriller that surely belongs somewhere in the Twilight Zone.
THE FOURTH KIND
While studying a disproportionate amount of unexplained disappearances in the past 40 years, a psychotherapist (Mila Jovovich) suspects aliens and a government cover-up are to blame. The movie is allegedly a reenactment of real archival documentary footage, which adds a whole other level to this sci-fi flick.
