“We Are The World” Redux

February 1st, 2010  |  Filed under: Jack's Entertainment News

Picture this. It’s 1985. The superpowers are gripped by the Cold War, America has New Coke, and Michael J. Fox has a flux capicitor.

‘85 was also a landmark year for charitable music stylings as Michael Jackson and his supergroup of musicians releases the hugely popular “We Are The World”. The group going under the name USA for Africa included Bruce Springsteen, Lionel Ritchie, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Tina Turner, Huey Lewis, Cyndi Lauper, Steve Perry, and Paul Simon to name a few. The song topped music charts worldwide and became the fastest selling single in music history. According to Wikipedia, as of 2009, the song has raised over $63 million in humanitarian aid in Africa.

But with Haiti fresh on everyone’s minds, original producer Quincy Jones is apparently shopping a remake around LA to raise money for the poverty-stricken country.

Who knows who they’ll ask, but we doubt Jack is on the short list.

Crazy Video: 2009 Air Guitar World Champion

In 2009, Frenchman Sylvian Gunther Love Quimene was crowned the winner of the World Air Guitar Championship. We can’t really say anything else about it. We’re too impressed.

Pittsburgh Rumored to Join Big 10 Conference

February 1st, 2010  |  Filed under: Jack's Crazy News

When it comes to college athletics,  Chicago is a Big Ten town. From Hawkeyes to Buckeyes, Wolverines to Gophers; Big Ten alums flock to the Windy City in force after college and you’d be hard-pressed to walk the streets on a Fall Saturday afternoon without seeing at least a couple alumni shirts crowding bars and sidewalks.

The conference is one of the largest and oldest in the nation and word is they are ready to expand. The current 11 school roster is looking to add another university to their ranks and there is no shortage of interested programs.

While Notre Dame would probably make the most sense, they remain on the outs. The four in contention are widely thought to be Missouri, Rutgers, Syracuse, and Pittsburgh. And now rumors are circulating on the Internet that a few athletes at Pitt were told over the weekend that they would soon be joining the Big Ten and an official announcement would be made this week. A NY Times article from Saturday discusses the possibility of Pitt joining the Big Ten and how it could cause a rippling effect on all college athletics.

So Big Ten fans – what do you say?

Lady Gaga has all the qualities of a Pop Diva. She’s won some Grammy’s, she’s cancelled shows last minute for no reason, and she is adored by teenage girls and Boystown bar-goers. But what drives home the “diva” title is her ridiculous outfits. From crazy masks to weird hair concoctions, the girl seems to never leave the house without something insane attached to her face.

At last night’s Grammy Awards, she was photographed back stage with what looks like the Agrocrag from Nickelodeon’s show GUTS perched atop her dome.

Jack has put together some other ideas for the stylista because she must be nearing the bottom of her “ridiculous hat” barrel.

Public Service Announcement Billboards

With all of the attention on Lady Gaga these days, Jack feels she could do a lot of good. Maybe donate her head to helping promote reading programs and keeping kids in school.

A LIVE BADGER

Adding wildlife to her ‘do’ would not only help Gaga connect better to nature, but a ferocious forest beast such as a badger would be perfect paparazzi repellent.

15 MINUTES

Her 15 Minutes of Fame must be running out, so she might as well flaunt it while it’s still available. Was that too harsh?

10-GALLON HAT

Ten Gallon Hats are a lot like moustaches – they make you look awesome, regardless of gender. No doubt in our mind that Gaga could rock a comically over-sized piece of Americana.

Green Day Getting Broadway Treatment

February 1st, 2010  |  Filed under: Jack's Music Beat, The Grammys

America’s favorite punk-band-grown-up won their 4th career Grammy last night for Best Rock Album and treated fans to a unique performance of their hit single “21 Guns”. The band won huge in 2005 with their album American Idiot, which apparently is now a Broadway Musical???

The band was joined on stage last night by the cast of the American Idiot musical which is set to open on April 10th at the St. James Theatre in New York City. The plot of the musical follows a group of bored teens who leave Suburbia to find “the real world” in the city. It discusses teen pregnancy, drugs, rehab, TV saturation, not accomplishing anything in your life, and other inspiring themes perfect for America’s youth!

Jack FM would never say anything bad about a band we love so dear, but something about Green Day’s American Idiot getting sung by an American Idol-esque crowd makes them extremely “less rock” in our eyes.

Dave Matthews Band might not have brought home Album of the Year last night, but they still had much to celebrate. 2010 marks the 20th Anniversary of the band being together. With humble beginings playing Jazz clubs in Charlottesville, VA – DMB has developed a huge fanbase and become one of the biggest touring acts in music history. Above is the video of the band performing the song “You and Me” from their 2009 release Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King.

If you like this performance, you should definitely check the band out this summer as they pull through town on their annual warm-month American tour. The 2010 dates include a pair of shows on July 3rd & 4th at Alpine Valley with opening act Zac Brown Band (who also won a Grammy last night for Best New Artist), a June date in Noblesville, IN, and a rumored show sometime this summer at Wrigley Field.

The most rocking performance from last night’s Grammy Awards goes to guitar God Jeff Beck who paid homage to Les Paul who passed away this past August at the age of 94. Les Paul, who current generations know best as a brand of Gibson electric guitar, was the original axe-master creating the hard body electric guitar that made Rock ‘n Roll possible.

Jeff Beck rocked an awesome version of Les Paul’s classic “How High the Moon” and showed the world why the former Yardbird-er completely deserved his induction into the Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame last April. Beck also took home a Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance last night for his rendition of The Beatle’s “Day in the Life” which you can watch below.

Elton John and Lady Gaga?

February 1st, 2010  |  Filed under: Jack's Music Beat, The Grammys

The 52nd annual Grammy Awards started off with a bang as 2009’s break-out pop diva Lady Gaga lept out of a “Fame Factory” dressed as a forest nymph. At one point she was thrown down a trash chute (we weren’t suprised) and later rolled out on a platform dueling piano’s with Sir Elton John.

It shouldn’t really be a surprise that Elton performed with the pop Princess since he has spent previous Grammy Awards sharing the stage with Eminem and George Michael. Oh, and they both love glitter eyewear.

What is surprising is that Lady Gaga has now landed herself a permanent notch in Grammy history. While she didn’t win Best Album, Song, or Record of the Year… she did take home some trophies. Maybe standards have dropped over time, but there are several musicians who have never held a golden gramaphone:

Bob Marley – 0

Buddy Holly – 0

The Doors – 0

Lynrd Skynrd – 0

Jimi Hendrix – 0

Queen – 0

The Who – 0

Led Zeppelin – 0

Lady Gaga – 2

Bon Jovi’s Interactive Grammy Show

February 1st, 2010  |  Filed under: Jack's Music Beat, The Grammys

The performances at last night’s Grammys were great. From crazy duets to Broadway-induced-rock, there was something for everyone. And Jack artist Bon Jovi showed they still had what it takes with a three-song medely that included an interactive finale chosen by the fans.

Those watching at home were able to log onto CBS.com and vote for what song they wanted JBJ to close out their performance with. The winner was an expected choice with “Livin’ on a Prayer”, but we’re a little disappointed in the selection.

“Wanted Dead or Alive” would have been pretty cool. He could’ve ended it peeling off stage on a motorcycle… shooting fireworks out of the exhaust. Or maybe he should have serenaded Beyonce with that power ballad “Always”, try and seduce her away from Jay-Z. These are just ideas, Jon. Feel free to use any of them at Soldier Field this summer.
