JACK’s 2nd favorite time of year is nearing, the concert pre-season. Most artists don’t dare venture into Chicago winters for fear of 20 inches of snow or sub-zero temps.

Although we’re hosting a few good shows this winter (ahem, Bret Michaels, Eddie Money and Huey Lewis). We enjoy February because we get to start dreaming about the warm weather outdoor concert venues, swarms of people in our personal space and people passed out in the lawn from a few too many brew-skis. We’ll undoubtedly keep you posted on the many shows to be announced over the next few weeks, and there are several more good ones coming.

But for now we want to let you know that Chicago, the band, will be playing a killer show with The Doobie Brothers on Friday, July 16th at Charter One Pavilion. Potentially our favorite outdoor venue.

You can purchase tickets starting Saturday, February 27th starting at 10am at www.Livenation.com, the House of Blues Box Office, or charge by phone at (800) 745-3000.

Just like most other shows to come, JACK will be offering up some free tickets – including tickets in our own made up section 104.3. Keep an eye out for details starting next week.

Chicagoans Rock Vancouver

February 19th, 2010  |  Filed under: Daily Post

There are several Chicago athletes currently competing in the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. And they currently are cleaning up. Just goes to show, we might not be able to host the games… but that doesn’t mean we can’t destroy the competition.

In case you were wondering, that picture above is in fact someone ski-jumping in old Soldier Field in 1954 – how awesome is that?

-

Evan Lysacek

The 24-year-old Naperville native took home Gold last night in the Men’s Skating competition, beating out the Russian favorite Evgeny Plushenko by .55 points. It is the first time the United States has won Gold in the event since Brian Boitano in 1988. The fact that Lysacek beat out Plushenko who is the current World Champion is a pretty big underdog story… it’s sort of like Rocky IV on Ice.

Patrick Kane

Chicago Blackhawk star Patrick Kane is getting shots in at the Canada Hockey Place. The sole Chi-town member of Team USA, Kane is credited with a goal in the win over Norway to extend USA to a perfect 2-0. The team needs some work, but at least Kane (who is the youngest member of Team USA and the top American-born scorer in NHL) is looking good. Sunday, Team USA takes on the hometown heroes, Team Canada, for a prime-time showdown at 6:30pm.

Shani Davis

The southside speedskater already has one Gold on his mantle from 2006. On Wednesday he won another Gold in Vancouver for the 1,000m speedskate and now he’s on track to take home first again this Saturday in the 1,500m.

Wilco

It isn’t just athletes that are destroying the games. Chicago band Wilco kicked off it’s 2010 “Tundra Tour” by playing a free show in Vancouver to celebrate the start of the Games on February 14th. What we want to know is… where are all the Canadian musicians? What, Nickelback was busy? Avril Lavigne had something better to do than sing for her country? Just another reason Chicago is superior to our northern neighbors.

Tiger Woods is to return to therapy after he speaks publicly for the first time about his infidelity, according to a letter from PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem that was obtained by The Associated Press.

Finchem’s letter to the PGA Tour policy board and other officials explained why Woods chose Friday to make his first public comments, which are to be televised live by all the major networks.

Woods’ statement comes during the Match Play Championship, sponsored by Accenture, the first company to drop Woods as a pitchman.

“As we understand it, Tiger’s therapy called for a week’s break at this time during which he has spent a few days with his children and then will make his statement before returning,” Finchem said in a letter Thursday. “Accordingly, there was very little flexibility in the date for the announcement.”

Woods is to speak at 11 a.m. ET today from the clubhouse at the TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., home of the PGA Tour. It’s the next major step in image rehabilitation, since his adultery scandal exploded last November, reports CBS News correspondent Mark Strassmann.
