It’s a touch of old Vegas: Vintage neon signs are being restored and will adorn a stretch of downtown’s Las Vegas Boulevard.
About 17 signs, some from casinos dating to the 1950s, will be part of the boulevard’s Scenic Byways Plan, said Danielle Kelly, operations manager for the Neon Museum, which is providing the signs.
The signs — including the horseshoe that once topped Binion’s Horseshoe casino and the slipper from the Silver Slipper next to the New Frontier casino — recall earlier years of the city that grew out of the desert to become America’s gambling mecca.
The Hacienda horse and rider from the Hacienda Hotel, where the Mandalay Bay stands today, was already on display. Other sign candidates include those from the Algiers Hotel, the Black Jack Motel and the City Center Motel.
So far the project has gotten $240,000 from the sale of Las Vegas Centennial license plates to refurbish three signs. About $900,000 from the city went for median improvements in the Cultural Corridor.
Three simple letters could inspire the “Hallelujah” chorus: DND, or do not disturb. One sign hanging on a doorknob, and the day’s work was shortened by half an hour. Two signs? Pure heaven, but only if they remained there until my eight-hour shift ended — otherwise I’d have to circle back and clean the rooms.
My daily list of 15 rooms (out of 325 in the hotel) consisted of DOs (due out) and Os (occupied), which in housekeeping lingo meant the guests were scheduled to check out or were staying another night. An occupied room was less labor-intensive (making the beds rather than changing the sheets saved me 20 minutes), but there was always the possibility the guest would stay in the room while you worked. This may shock many, but for people like myself who studied topics like this in college it is the unfortunate truth. I definitely had some dental floss under my sheets in a hotel I stayed at while on a road trip. Does anyone have any nasty stories from a hotel stay that was just plain nasty?

“Don’t get speared by the shark’s tooth,” my kayaking guide warns. “Stay low.” Then his neon green boat disappears through a small gap that separates the Pacific from a towering cliff. I follow, hesitantly. full story
What an experience this would be. Has anyone out there done something so thrilling? Let me know!
’Tis the season to start planning your holiday vacation. While this year’s shaky economy will force some to roast their chestnuts and stuff their stockings at home, others are already building their far-flung itineraries and checking them twice. For many intrepid holiday travelers, Christmas is just not complete with a passport, a suitcase of good cheer, and a warm bed as far from home as the North Pole.
But deciding where to celebrate is not as simple as it is during other times of the year. Not surprisingly, fares and rates tend be higher around the holidays, which can dictate which destination you choose. But local customs (13 Santa Clauses of Iceland or roving masked musicians in the Caribbean?), unexpected seasonal closings, even flight availability—especially in the US, when you’re competing for seat space with whole families flying grandma’s house—all factor into the equation.
For those of you who travel during the holidays. Here are some great places to check out! Let me know what you think!
